We learn reading, writing, listening, writing and speaking all together.  All areas work in a circle...It all connects...
What can we do as teachers to maximize teaching our children in the most natural approach so they can attain success in language?

SCAFFOLDING

The kids in our classroom are infinitely more significant than the subject matter we teach.
-- Meladee McCarty
The important lesson in this chapter is that  SCAFFOLDING! We need to build on what the students already know, provide a model for them to be independent learners.

Languages in the Attic

"Words were medicine:  they were magic and invisible.  They came from nothing into sound and meaning.  They were beyond price; they could neither be bought nor sold."
                                                                                N. Scott Momaday (Kiowa) House Made of Dawn, 1968

This quote started this evening's class...which connected perfectly with Chapter 2's content- language acquisition.  At first I tried to understand the meaning behind the quote but it became clearer after the Languages in the Attic activity.  Language is valuable.
The Lanugages in the Attic activity helped me to realize and learn about my parents and grandparents language acquisition.  The languages spoken depleted as it came to my generation.  The graphic showed how my elders spoke more languages than what my siblings and I spoke.  The activity asked to make a family tree.  As I completed the family tree, I began to realize that I spoke only English.  This came about because of my parents' decision to move to the United States.  They moved for the reasons of employment and opportunity.

Language is still valuable.  I find myself wanting to learn more about other languages.

I was able to connect my Chapter 1 reading to my own classroom setting.  Fortunately, I have the experience of  using differentiated instruction in my classroom planning for all content areas.  I had participated in a UDDI Universal Design for Differentiated Instruction a couple of years back.  We had to implement this lesson planning design and instruction the following school year and have so since.
It is such a support for my students' needs.  I have a wide range of learning needs and styles in my classroom.  Using my assessment data, it helps with my guided reading groups and math skills.

Learning...again!

"Learning is finding out what we already know. Doing is demonstrating that you know it. Teaching is reminding others that they know just as well as you. You are all learners, doers, and teachers." -- Richard Bach

As a new semester of learning and hard work begins, I try to remind myself of the 17 reasons in Room E117- why I continue to learn, do and teach....I look forward being part of this class!

My name is Lorna Gonzalez.  I teach 1st grade at CDR W.C. McCool Elementary School on Naval Base.  I enjoy working with the little ones with developing skills.   It has been a wonderful 12 years of balanced literacy and guiding reading with  sight words, phonics sessions, counting to 100, colorful manipulatives and more.  My greatest joy is seeing the leap of growth in learning in my group of smiling faces!
